WJWTRTW / Universe’s End (6:14)

•December 2, 2003 • Leave a Comment

Composition & lyrics: Ville

Track details:
Matti: lead vocals, percussion
Oikku: electric & acoustic guitars, keyboards, backing vocals, drum loop
Ville: fretted bass, keyboards, backing vocals
Janne Ervelius: drums

* A larger piece containing symmetric tempo changes
* All parts are built around a single rhythmic motive, usually played (at least) by the bass.
* The drum loop in the slower part is performed by Marko, the faster parts are played by Janne Ervelius.
* The guitar solo features the main riff from another song, should be easy to find out which. Parts of the solo are shamelessly ripped from Ville’s keyboard solo from a demo version of the song.
* The weird background stuff in the beginning was recorded using Matti’s recycled radio in his backyard terrace

Composition: Veijalainen & Oikarinen

Track details:

Oikku: electric guitars, drums
Ville: fretted bass, keyboards, clarinet
Antti Karhu: trumpet
Simo Laitakari: cello

This musically dense and dramatic instrumental track serves as an introduction to the album. Despite its relatively short duration, it is perhaps the most complex work on the CD.

The composition was basically built by Ville from themes and motives from other songs. The arrangement features acoustic instruments taking turns with distorted guitars and a trumpet section with trash metal accompaniment in 11/4 time!

“Trusties Evolution Version II” is the new Trusties lineup for acoustic live shows. EV-II features Suti on electric guitar. The fretboard frenzy of Suti can also be witnessed on the recordings and live performances of the band Aquaplan. There is also an “Evolution Version III” with more surprises in the works…

    Composition: Veijalainen, Oikarinen

    Comments by Ville:

    • Ville wrote the song by developing the themes of ‘Faraway’
    • Ville plays the pump organ parts. Matti did the actual pumping in order to minimize the noise (not credited).

    Composition: Oikarinen, Ylilauri
    Lyrics: Ylilauri, Oikarinen

    Comments by Oikku:

    • Something about this song makes it very “heavy metal” to me.
    • The guitars in the beginning of the song are not exactly how they were meant to be. There was a little “Oops!” during mixing that wasn’t noticed until later. We had to fix it in mastering by killing the right channel.

    Composition: Oikarinen, Ylilauri, Veijalainen
    Lyrics: Ylilauri, Oikarinen

    Comments by Matti:

    • Neo-Morrison lyrics?

    Comments by Ville:

    • Marko played something for the intro just for fun, Ville insisted that the parts must be included in the mix.
    • The song has been recently re-arranged for drums

    Composition: Veijalainen
    Lyrics: Ylilauri, Veijalainen

    Comments by Ville:

    • We first tried to record this in the church of Lumijoki, but couldn’t finish the session before the rain started… everything was later re-recorded in the studio.
    • Ville plays the other guitar part.
    • The triangle part was arranged for six months or so.
    • The first version of the composition was about 7 minutes long with A, B and C-sections. Ville was not happy with it, and kept only the A-parts throwing the others away. Good decision.

    Comments by Matti:

    • There are some interesting co-incidences in this text and in an older demo-song “The duck is dead and the past is present”

    Composition: Oikarinen, Ylilauri, Veijalainen
    Lyrics: Ylilauri

    Comments by Ville:

    • An older song dating back to 1992. The music is revised for many parts.
    • The live-version contains a solo-section, where some group improvisation may take place.
    • Has recently been re-arranged for drums.

    Comments by Matti:

    • The lyrics were originally in Finnish. They came out in the University of Oulu during one intense Finnish language lesson. Translated by Matti.

    Composition: Oikarinen, Ylilauri, Veijalainen
    Lyrics: Ylilauri, Oikarinen

    Comments by Ville:

    • An older song dating back to 1990. The music is revised for many parts, and the lyrics are new.
    • As the cymbals enter, they stick to the same pattern through the bridge and the chorus while the time-signature changes underneath.

    Comments by Matti:

    • After some difficulties in writing the lyrics, Marko and Matti were sitting in Marko’s livingroom. On the bookself there was a NOKIA cellular box. Words “Connecting people” on that box opened the way to the present lyrics.
